Dive Boat Etiquette: What to Know Before You Board
Eric Larson·December 2, 2022· 4 min read
Here are some things we want all divers to know before they get to the boat! These apply to most other dive boats as well. If you have any questions, you can always ask the crew!
Arrive on time
Show up 15–30 minutes before departure. This gives you time to get your gear on the boat, set up your first tank, and complete paperwork before we leave the dock. Running late? Call the shop or boat and let us know!
Load only when told to
Wait for the Divemaster or Captain. We need to make sure the boat is ready and that you're in the correct place — we seat people based on skill level and activities.
Pay attention to the dive briefing
We cover required safety equipment, emergency procedures, and specifics for the day's dives. You may have heard it many times, but it could be a first for others. Chatting during the briefing can prevent someone from hearing information that could save their life — or yours.
Keep your gear organized
Our boat is big for only 6 people, but keep your gear in your immediate area so no one trips over it and it's ready for your next dive. Bags go on the hatch in front of you or under your seat. Pole spears and spearguns go under the benches or in the racks at the stern. Things that must stay dry go in the bow. Between dives is when gear disappears — keep yours in one spot.
Assemble your gear before we reach the site
Set up your first tank before we arrive. After your first dive, grab some water and relax for a minute, then swap your gear to your next tank. Divemasters are happy to help if needed.
Be ready on the dive platform
Do your checks and buddy checks while seated. When you get up, move to the platform ready to get in the water.
Getting back on the boat
Follow the dive briefing. Typically you'll hold one of the four dive platform ropes, remove your fins and hand them to a crewmember, then move to the ladder.
Tip the crew
In most cases Divemasters work for tips — for the love of the sport, not the money — and handle a long list of duties supporting the Captain and your dive. Please tip based on the service you received; 20% is customary. If something could have been better, talk to the Captain before you leave.
Remember to HAVE FUN!
