R/V Dolphin

The county's second-largest vessel reef — a towering 190-foot research ship that suits beginners up top and advanced divers below.

On March 15, 2023, Okaloosa County deployed the DOLPHIN, a surplus research vessel previously used for oil and gas exploration in the Gulf. She reached the bottom in just 15 minutes — the fastest deployment the county has ever had.

Part of a $2 million effort to acquire the DOLPHIN and her sister ship MANTA, she sits in 120 feet of water about 16 nautical miles south of Destin.

“What's really cool about the DOLPHIN is that it is really tall, so it'll accommodate your beginner divers as well as your advanced divers with the top being at about 60–70 feet,” said Coastal Resource Manager Alex Fogg.
